How long have you been raising miniature Dachshunds?

We have been raising miniature Dachshunds since 2008.

What is the average life expectancy of a miniature dachshund?

In general, larger dogs live shorter lives than smaller dogs. This is due to the fact that the bodies of larger dogs must work harder and are more stressed than the bodies of smaller dogs. The life expectancy of any one dog in particular is also determined by the stresses in its life (both physical and psychological), what it eats and how well it is taken care of.  With that said, the average life expectancy of a miniature dachshund is 12 to 15 years.

What comes with a new puppy?

Each puppy sold by Eagle Spirit Dachshunds comes with a Puppy Pack which contains helpful information about your new puppy and a free sample of the puppy foodwe are currently feeding it.  You will also receive a copy of the puppy’s record detailing its growth, a health record brochure, the CKC registration application and a copy of your puppy contract. Last but not least you will receive a collar for your new puppy as well as a puppy blanket. Most of all you will be receiving years of love and loyalty from your new best friend.

Do you accept deposits to reserve a puppy?

Yes, we do accept a non-refundable (but transferable) deposit to hold an available puppy of your choice.  The deposit is applied to the total cost of the puppy.

Do you ship your puppies?

At the present time, we do not ship our puppies. We are wiling to meet part way as a convenience. Distance and costs can be discussed at the time of purchase.

Do you have a waiting list?

If you are interested in an upcoming litter or are looking for a specific puppy in the future, we would be happy to take down your name and contact information.  People on my waiting list have first choice after people that have placed a deposit.

What food do I feed my new puppy?

Here at Eagle Spirit Dachshunds we start all of our puppies on Eukanuba puppy food.  It is small bites and can be mixed with water to create gravy for your puppy. We recommend that you keep your puppy on the same food but if you decide to change, do it gradually by mixing the new type of food in with the original; say a mixture of 80% Eukanuba and 20% new food and then slowly increase the amount of new food in the mixture until the puppy is completely on the new food.

Do your puppies come with a written health guarantee?

All of our puppies leave with a three month written health guarantee which covers most pre-existing, congenital and genetic diseases.  Please feel free to read over our contract by clicking here.

Do your puppies come with shot records and a vet check?

We provide all age appropriate vaccinations and worming.  Puppies are vet checked by a licensed veterinarian.

When are the puppy due shots?

Our puppies are given their initial vaccination at six weeks of age.  We will provide you with the day and type of vaccination given so when you take your new puppy to your veterinarian they will establish a vaccination schedule for you.

How much do your puppies cost?

Prices vary depending on gender, color/pattern, coat type and quality of each individual puppy.

How do you take a dog's temperature?

If you suspect your dog is sick then taking your dog's temperature is important. It is not difficult, but it is a task best performed with two people. Have someone hold the dog still, preferably someone the dog knows and likes.

Apply petroleum jelly to the head or bulb of a rectal thermometer.

Slowly slide the thermometer into the dog's rectum about 1 inch deep.

Wait 2 minutes for a mercury thermometer.

Remove slowly and read the thermometer. Shake down the thermometer and clean it after every use.

A dog's normal body temperature ranges between 100.5 Fahrenheit (38.1°C) and 102.5 Fahrenheit (39.2°C).

A dog's temperature below 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37.2°C) and temperatures above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C) are considered extremely serious and your dog should be brought to a veterinarian immediately.

Can I breed my puppy?

We do not limit our puppy registrations to “pet only”. This allows you to breed your puppy but your decision on whether or not to breed your dog should not be taken lightly. Breeding any type of dog takes considerable dedication, time and money.

How do I potty train the puppy?

Always bear in mind that a dog evacuates his bowels on waking in the morning, after a meal, and about 3 hours after a meal, especially as a puppy.

As soon as he wakes in the morning, and after every nap, take him directly outdoors to empty his bladder and/or bowel. Take him to the same place each time, stay with him and give him 10-15 minutes to "perform". I find that an expression associated with the action is very helpful in the teaching process. You choose your own words - " do your chores" - "time for business" etc. When the same phrase is repeated over a few days, the pup learns what it is you want of him very quickly. Your puppy is a very intelligent dog and eager to please you. When he does what you've requested of him, heap praise on him and bring him back into the house immediately and give him a little reward treat. There should be no outdoor play until he has it firmly in his mind that the outdoors is the place to go to relieve himself.

Remember that you are dealing with a baby with a small bladder, and you should expect to have accidents to clean up until he is about 6 months old. When accidents do happen, DO NOT RUB HIS NOSE IN IT, OR HIT HIM. A rolled up newspaper has no value in teaching a dog. You wouldn't do that to a child or want it done to you. YOUR PUP DOES HAVE DIGNITY TOO!!!
